Statement: When the kids grow is an exhibition of eight artists working with photography to collectively navigate the quiet, chaotic process of becoming. As they bring throughlines of growth, personal histories, identity, imaginative play, and connection, into play, these works balance the complexity of being and the nuances of growing and growing up.
Each artist, though working with independent subjects, is bound by a collective and emergent pulse—grappling with larger questions of the human and non-human scale and asking “what does it mean to grow?”
We are no longer who we were, but are not yet who we will become.
Students in Building the Portfolio class have worked throughout the semester to identify their passions, questions, and concerns. The projects represented reflect a wide range of photographic approaches and thoughtful experimentations. Topics range in scope and build upon a sense of urgency in our contemporary time, embody reflective moments of meditation, and care in times of fragility and transition.
This class is process oriented with emphasis on discovering a creative and aesthetic voice. With emphasis on classroom critique students have established strong decision making and critical thinking skills as they built their final portfolios.
