Emma Woolcott
In the 2025 Global Urbanism Studio, Emma Woolcott, MArch/MUD ‘25, challenges the transition of canal-based markets in Bangkok to the mega-malls we see today and questions the mono-functional permanence of market spaces. Based in Min Buri Market, on the outskirts of the city and along the Saen Saep canal, the market has taken over the streets in between traditional 1960s shophouse typologies, which are found everywhere in the city. The main goals are to create climate comfort, provide utilities for vendors, and storage. This is done through customizable structures, water-capturing platforms, permeable ground, and activating spaces for recreation and dance.
