“Using the visual language of the Corinthian crowned column found on many American government buildings, I replace the traditional acanthus leaves of classical architecture with tobacco leaves, a symbol of the South and Lumbee agriculture. Pipelines pays homage to the Lumbee tribe’s full federal recognition in 2026 after seventy years of partial recognition. The column sits upon wooden dunnage representing the movement of the object and metaphorical changing of power as the Lumbee people regain the ability to govern their own land.”
