The Sam Fox School awarded six faculty its 2020-21 Creative Activity Research Grants, which encourage the pursuit of innovative new projects or the advancement of ongoing creative activity and research.
The following recipients were chosen by a jury of tenured and tenure-track faculty:
Jonathan Hanahan, assistant professor, to support the physical production, software, and digital development of Edgelands, a research-based work that uses machine learning to explore the increasing tension between the natural world and the infiltration of electronic waste.
Igor Marjanović, JoAnne Stolaroff Cotsen Professor, to support the acquisition of high-resolution image files that will be further researched, organized, and included in RED WORLD: Globalism and Cold War Architectural Education, as well as to cover the cost of permission fees for this material to be published in the book.
Eric Mumford, Rebecca and John Voyles Professor of Architecture, and Shantel Blakely, assistant professor, to support a research project to produce a small-format monograph on the St. Louis architect Charles E. Fleming, the first African-American graduate of the Washington University School of Architecture.
Tim Portlock, professor, to support his upcoming exhibition scheduled for Locks Gallery in April 2021. The exhibition will present imagery of construction sites and demolished buildings that allude to broader social changes that have occurred in most major American cities since 2008.
Denise Ward-Brown, professor, to support the cost to travel to New York City to film the transfer of embodied dance archive and the choreography training sessions from Dr. Glory Van Scott to Heather Beal for the role of the Queen and the staging of all four acts in Rites de Passage.
