Faculty and students from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ fashion design program were recognized by the International Textile and Apparel Association’s annual meeting in Denver recently.
Jennifer Ingram (College of Art, senior lecturer) won the ITAA Award for Creative and Innovative Employment of Techniques for her piece Ebony and Ivory. The award recognizes techniques (e.g. patternmaking, draping, surface design, and/or construction) that introduce something new and challenge conventions or established methods.
Ingram’s Ebony and Ivory includes a jacket made from patchworked post-consumer waste (repurposed denim) with hand embroidery and beading and a dress made from pre-consumer waste (deadstock knit). The piece blends traditional fabric manipulation and embellishment techniques in a contemporary way, in addition to, celebrating African American cultural references to style and beauty.
Also at the annual meeting, Mackenzie Llewellyn (BFA/BSBA23) and Connor Seger (BFA23) were accepted into the juried exhibition. Llewellyn was one of only three undergraduate students to be awarded the Blanche Payne Scholarship for a creative design or technical design research paper. Mary Ruppert-Stroescu (College of Art, professor and fashion design area coordinator) was recognized for her service as ITAA Treasurer.
