Pursue a graduate degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design and another field at WashU.
For students who want to broaden their education at the graduate and post-professional levels, we offer dual degree options within the Sam Fox School’s MArch, MLA, and MUD programs.
We also offer several joint master’s degree programs in conjunction with other divisions of WashU, including Business Administration (MBA), Computer Science & Engineering (MEng), Construction Management (MCM), Social Work (MSW), and Public Health (MPH).
Dual Degree Programs: MArch + MLA + MUD
If you have multifaceted interests within the field, we encourage you to pursue a dual degree. You can earn a dual master’s degree from the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design faster than completing the two degrees separately.
Master of Architecture + Master of Urban Design
This dual degree program prepares architects to be cognizant of the larger urban context of architectural practice and to extend their expertise into another discipline.
Students entering the MArch/MUD program complete a substantial portion of the design studios for the MArch program prior to completing the MUD studios, which are then followed by the MArch Degree Project.
Other course requirements in urban design typically are spread out over the entire study period. The length of study is dependent upon the MArch program in which the student is enrolled, but typically adds an additional semester and summer to the student’s curriculum.
Master of Architecture + Master of Landscape Architecture
Students engaged in this dual degree program will significantly expand their general design culture by interweaving courses in landscape and architecture; understand design as a systemic enterprise; and acquire the skills to operate across disciplines and scales.
Students must be admitted to both the MArch and MLA program in order to pursue this dual degree. The length of study is dependent upon the MArch and MLA programs in which the student is enrolled.
Master of Landscape Architecture + Master of Urban Design
Students must be admitted to both the three-year MLA program and the MUD program in order to pursue this dual degree. The length of study is dependent upon the MLA program in which the student is enrolled.
Typically, students with no prior design degree will need 3.5 years to complete the dual MLA/MUD dual degree. Students in the MLA 2 program will typically need 3 years to complete the dual MLA/MUD dual degree.
Quinn Adam, MArch/MLA ‘27, came to design school to learn how to integrate our built environments into natural systems.
Elliott Jones Boyle, MArch/MUD ‘23, has big questions about the societal impact of the built environment and the choices we make as designers.
Q&A with Rachel Madryga (MArch20, MUD20, MCM20), who currently works as an architect for the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC NW) in Silverdale, Washington.
For students who have diverse interests outside the field, we offer joint degree programs in business administration, construction management, computer science and engineering, public health, and social work.
This allows you to tailor your degree program to the career you’re interested in while taking full advantage of the academic resources of Washington University.
