Needle Felting: Covering Everyday Objects
This workshop, facilitated by Sam Fox School MFA student Emilia-Qian Shen, draws inspiration from the artistic practice of Haegue Yang. Yang imbues warmth, softness, and care into disposable everyday items, prompting a reconsideration of our relationship to mundane objects.
Workshop participants will explore the technique of wool needle felting to create covers for ordinary objects like cups, water bottles, cans, and tissue boxes. By engaging in this tactile process, participants will reimagine their connection to these often-overlooked items, fostering a deeper appreciation for the materials that shape our daily lives.
For ages 14 and up.
Free and open to the public; registration is required.
About the Facilitator
Qian Shen, also known as Emilia, is an MFA student at WashU. Her art explores the complexities of the human body, using humor and a sense of duality to both attract and repel. Shen challenges our perception of reality by transforming familiar objects into uncanny representations. Through her work, she explores themes of power, vulnerability, and identity, inviting viewers to question societal norms. Shen’s art serves as a mirror, reflecting the ways in which social constructs influence our lives and relationships. By deconstructing and reassembling familiar forms, she prompts us to reconsider our preconceived notions and delve deeper into the complexities of the human experience.
