The Weitman Gallery is happy to host this year’s documentary photography group student exhibition. The exhibition features work from seven students in the Documentary Photography in the 21st Century photography course.
Statement
Here is the collective effort of seven intrepid students who took on a journey of inquiry—a process of asking questions and trying to find their place in a messy beautiful world.
Drawing inspiration from and working within a tradition as deeply embedded and conceptually fraught as documentary photography requires thoughtful consideration—not blind following.
Throughout the semester we approached through many questions—complex and essential questions such as:
- How does presence of the camera change relationships?
- How can photographs challenge assumptions and move across time and across generations?
- How can we foster a way of working that is attentive and caring—where the camera might offer an opportunity to shift extractive exchanges, and instead, offer reciprocal and mutual knowledge sharing.
As a result of these ongoing conversations, each student found their voice. Each student determined a place, a community, a set of conditions within which to explore with the camera.
Some of the projects are extensions of ideas begun before the semester start; some will continue long after the semester ends.
