Julie E. Bauer
Julie E Bauer is an architect with over 15 years of experience designing and leading major projects, often in collaboration with complex public and private institutions. She gained her experience at highly regarded design firms in Europe and the United States.
Born in Berlin, Germany, Bauer holds a degree in architecture from the Technical University of Berlin and studied at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Her career in Europe started at Barkow Leibinger Architects in Berlin and continued at David Chipperfield Architects in London, where she spent more than a decade and reached the role of associate director. During her tenure, she worked on award-winning museums, high-end residential projects, and hospitality projects in the UK, Russia, and the Middle East, though the majority of her time was spent designing and managing the expansion of the Saint Louis Art Museum. Bauer was involved with that project from its inception, when David Chipperfield Architects won the design competition in 2005, and led the project through all phases, from master planning to construction administration, including two years of final on-site supervision.
After the completion of the Saint Louis Art Museum expansion in 2012, Bauer moved to New York to work for accomplished firms such as high-end luxury retail architect Peter Marino and REX Architecture. She then rejoined David Chipperfield Architects as the firm’s New York representative, acting as liaison for the new Modern and Contemporary wing for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With a belief in critical thinking and a strong interest in place, clarity, and material quality, Bauer is currently working on her own projects in her hometown of Berlin and locally in St. Louis.
