2021 Divided City Graduate Summer Research Fellows Program

Nathan Stanfield (BS18, MArch22) has been selected for the 2021 cohort of the Divided City Graduate Summer Research Fellows Program, which provides WashU graduate students in the Humanities, Humanistic Social Sciences, Architecture, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture an opportunity to conduct research on urban segregation.

Stanfield’s research focuses on the histories and futures of water-based crises experienced by Native communities in the Twin Cities, St. Louis, and New Orleans regions. Through written and graphic media, he examines the effects of infrastructural and extractive interventions on Native land and water—considered both historically and currently—through flooding, infrastructural neglect and water supply contamination.

The Divided City is an urban humanities initiative in partnership with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Center for the Humanities, and the Sam Fox School at Washington University in St. Louis. The initiative seeks to bring humanities scholars into productive interdisciplinary dialogue with architects, urban designers, landscape architects, legal scholars, sociologists, and others around one of the most persistent and vexing issues in urban studies—segregation.
