Student Shows Announced for Spring 2024
2024-02-01 • Caitlin Custer
The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis has shared its lineup of student showcases and exhibitions for the spring 2024 semester. The work included in these exhibitions marks the most significant project of the year, and for some students, the culmination of their studies at WashU.
The nine artists in the MFA in Visual Art’s class of 2024 will show their thesis work in the exhibition “Slingshot” at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Students shared that the title holds layered meaning, “from references to childhood and play, to signifying gravity, movement, tension, and release… creative energy within our group, ‘slingshotting’ around with each other.”
The MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture thesis exhibition will return to the High Low in St. Louis’ Grand Center neighborhood. The literary arts café is an ideal pairing for the artist-authors graduating from the program.
Chaired by Matthew Allen, visiting assistant professor, YES24: Architecture’s Year-End Show features work from students in the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design. In the fall semester, students proposed designs for both the undergraduate and graduate exhibition. The graduate exhibition will transform Steinberg Gallery into a box-within-a-box, while the undergraduate exhibition takes inspiration from axonometric projection.
The annual Fashion Design Show — an area concentration for undergraduate students in the College of Art — returns to Ridgley Hall, this time celebrating its 95th year. Students design, develop, and create fashion collections, then models from Mother Model Management wear the designs on a runway.
Several of the undergraduate exhibitions, including the senior capstone exhibition, will be at the Des Lee Gallery in the Washington Avenue Loft District. The 1300-square-foot gallery, owned and operated by the Sam Fox School, regularly presents student and faculty work, as well as work by local and internationally known contemporary artists.
