About the artist
Tom Phillips attended St. Catherine’s College in Oxford, where he studied Anglo-Saxon and English literature. While there, he also studied drawing at Oxford’s Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. In 1960, he left Oxford for London, where he taught English, music, and art at a secondary school. He spent his evenings taking classes at Camberwell School of Fine Art until 1964. Phillips now devotes his time to art, music, theater, and poetry. He holds the honored position of a Royal Academician in the Royal Academy of Arts.
Phillips often combines these fields into true interdisciplinary creations, blending poetry and art on canvas and in books. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Australian National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in France.
