About the artist
Holly Roberts studied at Bellas Artes de Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, and the University of New Mexico at Quito, Ecuador, before completing her bachelor’s degree in 1973 at the University of New Mexico. In 1971, Roberts completed a Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University.
Roberts typically uses one of her own photographs as a base for her paintings. She covers the photograph with several layers of paint, working and reworking the surface, sometimes completely covering the underlying image. She has received several awards, including two photography grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Ferguson Grant from Friends of Photography in Carmel, California. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
