About the artist
Susan Shie earned a BA from the College of Wooster in Ohio and an MFA from Kent State University in Ohio. She began her career in fine arts as a ceramicist. Shie teaches classes and workshops at Turtle Moon Studios in Wooster, OH, as well as in museums and universities across the US and abroad. Shie’s work is held in collections around the world.
Shie creates art quilts with images and text created from varied materials, including ceramic buttons made by Shie, beads, paint, special stitching, and jewelry. She has been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, two grants from the Ohio Arts Council, and was awarded the Best of Show prize at Quilt National 1987. Her visit to Island Press was generously supported in part by the Women’s Society of Washington University in St. Louis.
