About the artist
Joseph Stefanelli studied at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art, the Art Students League in New York, and the Hans Hoffman School of Painting in New York. He has taught and served as a visiting artist at several universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, Cornell University, Columbia University, the New School for Social Research, NYU, and Washington University in St. Louis.
Stefanelli was associated with the New York Action Painters because of his loose, active painting technique. He has received numerous awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship and fellowships from the American Research Center, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, and the Pollock/Krasner Foundation. Stefanelli’s work is held in the collections of the National Academy of Design and the Whitney Museum of Art.
