About the artist
American, Born 1940
Rochelle Toner received a BA degree from the University of Northern Iowa. She earned MA and MFA degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she later joined the faculty. She began her teaching career at Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa in 1967 and went on to teach at the University of Illinois from 1970-72. In 1972, she began teaching at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, where she served as Dean until her retirement in 2002 to focus on her own artwork.
Toner has won many awards and her work has been exhibited in numerous venues throughout the United States. Her work is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University, St. Lawrence University, Dickinson College, and the Krannert Museum of Art at the University of Illinois. Toner’s visit to Island Press was generously supported in part by the Women’s Society of Washington University in St. Louis.
